The Mason Elementary/Jr. High PTO has been doing our Gadgets For Green Fundraiser - collecting certain recyclable items that we then turn in to a company for $$$. At the same time trying to raise awareness with the kids about the importance of recycling. The PTO has been working with Brian Boudreaux and Gaylon Thorne at the city, to help us kick off this fundraiser at the school. The City so generously purchased and donated to the PTO the small recycle white “trash bags” that the kids are holding up in the picture, and then inside the bags we put an “All about recycling” bookmark and temporary “I’m cool I recycle tattoo.” The city purchased the bookmarks and tattoos as well. These bags were handed out to all elementary and jr.. high kids at the kickoff of our fundraiser. They used the bags to turn in any of the things that they could for the fundraiser. We have also been trying to get recycling of paper going at the school, so the PTO coordinated with the city what we may need to get that going. The city purchased and donated 40 small recycle containers to go into the classrooms and then a large trash can on a rolling dolly for collection from the individual classrooms. In last year's budget the city had earmarked $1000.00 for the promotion of recycling. That money was not going to be in this coming year's budget, so it worked out great that they were able to use this money at this time before their fiscal year was up on October 31st. The third graders will take turns collecting the paper from the individual classrooms 1 or 2 days a week during their enrichment time.
