Brent Hinckley and Suzanne Bjork (from left) from the Mason Community Foundation recently presented a grant check to Melinda Biggs, Mission Associate for the Texas Dental Association Smiles Foundation (TDASF). Glenn A. Ruthven, DDS, who applied for the grant on behalf of the TDASF, was also on hand for the presentation. The grant from the Mason Community Foundation will help bring a Smiles on Wheels event to the community. Smiles on Wheels is a travelling program that brings approximately one dozen portable dental operatories to rural communities in underserved counties in Texas. These single day missions partner with churches, social clubs, and other advocacy and human service organizations to provide first level care to indigent populations, including free cleanings, fillings, extractions, and other dental procedures able to be completed in a mission setting. Since the program’s inception in December 2008, 1335 Texans have been provided $737,119 in charitable dentistry. Smiles on Wheels Mason is scheduled for July 31, 2010. For more information about the event, please contact the TDASF offices at 512-448-2441.
