Approximately 102 of the 168 descendants of Eleno and Rita Castillo attended their 11th annual family reunion at Ft. Mason Park Community Building July 2 and 3. Hosting the reunion this year was Vickie Montez and her family, Gerardo and Debbie Marquez and children, Andres and Noah of San Antonio; Nancy Marquez and Monika of Joliet, Illinois; and a special friend, Art Nelms. In attendance also, were the Castillo’s other children: Victor Castillo, Mary Velez, Olga Mesa, Valentina Dominguez, and Jane Zavala. Oldest member in attendance was Mary Velez; Youngest member in attendance was 9 month-old Noah Marquez; and Traveling the farthest was Nancy and Monika Marquez of Illinois. The festivities begin on Friday, July 2, with a picnic and continued on Saturday with breakfast, lunch and supper, and culminated on Saturday night with a 50’s dress theme, and music by DJ Pete Munoz. On Saturday the family took a trip to Gooch Cemetery to place flowers on Eleno and Rita’s graves. Leading the caravan was Victor Castillo and grandson (Little) Victor Castillo driving Grandpa Eleno’s 1952 International truck. "Making Memories" is the family’s motto and as each year goes by the family gets bigger and the little ones look forward to "the big party" as John Michael Valadez, great-grandson, says it. Plans are already in the making by the Zavala’s, who will be hosting next year’s reunion.
