L-R: Jan Appleby, Scott Zesch, Linda Laury, & Jane Hoerster, Mason County Historical Commission members, visited the Old Pontotoc Cemetery recently. The cemetery was abandoned in 1888 following a typhoid epidemic which took many lives in the Pontotoc area and filled up the cemetery. It has been neglected for many years and plans are underway by the Historical Commission to clean and restore the cemetery and apply for a Texas Historical Cemetery Designation. A new fence is needed to keep feral hogs out of the cemetery and the Commission is currently taking contributions to help pay for the the fence – our goal is $2000. If you would like to donate to this project, you can mail your donation to: MCHC P.O. Box 1542 Mason, TX 76856. A workday is scheduled for Saturday, November 12 from 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (hopefully it will be a bit cooler then!) More information will be coming about this workday and how you can help out.
