The Grand Champion Quilt honors at the Gillespie County Fair went to Geraldine L. Geistweidt of the Hilda community in Mason County. The trophy was presented by GCFFA Duchess Jordan Grobe of the Fredericksburg Fair. The quilt contains 4,440 small pieces and took six years of work to finish. It is paper machine pieced. It was quilted by Kay Andrews of Serenity Quilts of Brady, Texas. The colorful quilt has a black border with ten hand-appliqued red apples and six red tulips (each inserted with white crocheted lace) in the centers of the appliques, brought together with long brown vines and leaves for the apples and tulips. The name of the quilt is "Scrap Apple."
