Wednesday, April 18, 2012 • Posted April 18, 2012

Mason ISD Senior, James Matthew Banner, signed a National Letter of Intent this past week, to play tennis for St Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas. Present at the signing were Matt’s parents, Jim and Amelia Banner, Paul Smith, head tennis coach at Mason ISD, and Kaysie Smashey, Matt’s personal coach and close friend.

Matt will begin playing for St. Mary’s in the fall of 2012. The head coach for the Rattlers, Elizabeth Wheeler Dausin, reports she had a special place in her heart for a kid from Mason when she recruited Matt to play for St. Mary’s. Coach Dausin played tennis in Mason in the summers of her youth, at the Mason Open before it became known as The Mason Dr. Pepper Open. She fondly remembers the country courts, the entire town’s hospitality and, most especially, playing tennis at improvised courts set up on the streets around the courthouse square!

Mason has produced many tennis champions that have gone on to play college tennis and it is a testament to a strong foundation of tennis coaching and to Mason’s community commitment to the game of tennis that has made this possible!
