Odessa Eckert Kimbriel

Odessa Eckert Kimbriel of Mason passed away on December 29, 2012, at the age of 84. Odessa was born on September 1, 1928, to Dan and Lillie Eckert at their home in the Hilda Community. She attended school at Hilda and graduated from Mason High School in 1945. She attended North Texas Women’s College in Denton and then returned home to marry her high school sweetheart, Raymond Kimbriel.

They made their home on the Kimbriel Ranch in the Grossville Community, where they farmed and ranched and raised their family.

Odessa was a member of the Hilda Methodist Church, where she played the piano and was very active in the Missionary Society and the Sunday school program. She later joined Mason Community Church. She was an avid gardener and homemaker. Through the years, she raised much of the food her family ate and shared it with neighbors and friends. She took much pride in maintaining several houses on their land around the county, where her family and friends enjoyed many outings.

Odessa was a helpmate to her husband in their farming and ranching activities. Together, they made many improvements on their places.

Odessa was a beloved mother and grandmother to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. lovingly known as Grandma ‘Dessa to her grandchildren, she spent many days and nights caring for and enjoying them.

Odessa, along with her husband, Raymond and several other couples fulfilled their vision for Christian education in the Mason community, by opening the doors to Grace Christian School in 1987. She volunteered at the school for many years. They were also a part of Christian Marriage Renewal, and lay witness missions, where they traveled to different cities and countries, spreading God’s word.

She is survived by her four children and spouses: Kathryn Martin and husband Seth III, daughter Kerry Hofmann and husband Bruce, daughter Susan Grote and husband Warren, and son George (Hank) Kimbriel and wife Teresa, all of Mason. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren; Todd Martin and wife Sheri, Glen Martin and wife Rae Ann, Jena Hofmann Pantuso and husband Joshua, Dana Hofmann Martinez and husband Hiram, Sarah Hofmann Martinez and husband Steve, Deborah Hofmann, Kurt Hofmann and wife Kimberly, Kim Grote Shutt and husband Quentin, Kyle Grote and wife Shanna, Kris Grote Smith and husband Jason, Wade Kimbriel and wife Summer, Pepper Kimbriel Kroll and husband Chuck, and Kaci Kimbriel, along with 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond and her brother Roscoe Eckert.

A memorial service was held at Mason Community Church on December 30 at 3 p.m. Burial was at the family cemetery on the ranch.
