Call Them Out

Time to warm up the phone

The Christmas season sales figures are in, and it isn’t pretty. During Thanksgiving weekend, in which retail sales were strong, a 7% increase in sales was predicted nationwide. However, as December progressed, sales fell off everywhere. The final figure was 0.7% increase, way, way below the prediction. I’ve talked to retailers locally, and on a national level, and we all had the same experience. The last half of December was flat as a fritter. January has been extremely disappointing, and sales are way off, both locally and nationally. I’ve talked to customers that do come in, and they say they are not spending. They are all, to a person, expressing concern and fear about our congress. They are afraid of the continued destruction caused by congress refusing to do their job.

Indications are we are slipping back into recession. A deliberate, totally preventable return to the Great Recession. Our congress continues to refuse to work together to fix anything. Our leaders continue to betray our trust. They continue to use tools like the senate filibuster and debt ceiling to stop any congressional work. This is deliberate, and shows a complete disregard for the well-being of the country.

Our congress continues to ignore us, so it’s time to talk to them louder than their rich benefactors. It’s time to talk to them loudly and regularly. It’s time to call in person. The staff members sound tired, but willing to talk. Call our congress members, and tell them to do their job. Tell them to work with each other, and stop the rhetoric. Tell them the partisanship is killing us. Tell them you will vote them out of office if they don’t help us.
