Joseph Thorpe Sr.

Joseph Thorpe Sr. (LTC, U.S.M.C. Retired), of Mason, passed away on Thursday, January 24, at the age of 70.

Mr. Thorpe is survived by his wife Marylee Thorpe, of Mason, two sons Jim Thorpe and wife Wendy of Houston and Joseph Thorpe Jr. and wife Elizabeth of Lake Forest, California, five grandchildren Joseph Culter, Cody Thorpe, Danielle Thorpe, Lauryn Thorpe and Morgyn Thorpe. He was preceded in death by a son Vincent Thorpe.

Joseph was born on October 24, 1942, in Blackfoot, Idaho. He was one of nine children born to Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Thorpe. Joseph served his country for 30 years in the Marine Corps, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He served in Vietnam and also in the Middle East. During his time in the Marines he worked as a helicopter crew chief and then as a helicopter and fixed wing pilot.

On February 5, 1958, he married Marylee Hammond. They moved quite a bit while Joseph was in the Corps. After retiring they traveled around the country for a few years before settling in Mason in 1996. Joseph and Marylee loved to travel, especially to Alaska where they made several trips. Joseph also loved to hunt and fish in his spare time.

At Mr. Thorpe’s request there will be no public services. His cremated remains will be scattered in Alaska.
