Mason Community Foundation Offers Volunteer Opportunity at Thrift Store
Wednesday, January 21, 2009 • Posted January 21, 2009

The Mason Community Foundation is recruiting additional Saturday volunteers to serve at the Community Thrift Store!

The Foundation was formed in January 2007 to take action when Hill Country Memorial Hospital was to close the Hospice Thrift Shop. The store had been a part of Mason for over 10 years and many people recognized the value and need to keep this re-sale outlet open; 1) to have a place to purchase a wide variety of discounted items and 2) to have a place to donate useable items, keeping them out of the landfill and extending the life of that resource!

The financial success of the Thrift Store has been an added plus! All profits stay here in Mason and are returned to the community through grants to local non-profits. To date, the Foundation has provided over $42,000 to a variety of projects. Some who have benefited are the EMS, Fire Department, Sheriff’s Office, several area-wide children’s programs and the upgrading of medical equipment for the clinic and the school district. Applications are accepted three times a year and are awarded on the merits that they benefit a significant segment of the community.

Opening the Store for four hours on Saturdays has been a tremendous success! What began on a trial basis has proven to account for as much as 19% of total monthly sales! It is a popular Saturday destination for locals but also for out-of-towners (who then patronize other local businesses as they visit Mason!). But the Saturday operations depend on volunteers for that ½ day and individuals are asked to consider serving. The hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and requires little more than a good attitude! As for scheduling, each volunteer’s preference can be accommodated, whether it’s to serve only occasionally or on a regular basis!

For civic groups whose members volunteer, the Foundation would be very pleased to acknowledge your service, in the name of your organization, in publicity reports to the newspaper.

For further information, please contact D’Ann Stahl at 347-5700 or the Community Thrift Store at 347-6551, where weekday volunteers are welcome, as well.

The success of the Community Thrift Store depends on the vital support of residents and civic groups. With your help, we can continue to offer a great benefit for all citizens of Mason!
