Tennis Team Qualifies for State Team
Wednesday, March 6, 2013 • Posted March 7, 2013

It was a disappointing day for the tennis team as they were defeated 11-8 by Wall in the Regional finals last Saturday, but the main goal was reached as once again Mason will be competing at the State Tennis Tournament in Austin this coming weekend.

Mason soundly defeated a solid Miles in the semi-finals 18-1. This set up a rematch of last year’s finals between the Hawks and Mason. The match started with Wall having four seasoned senior boys and two senior girls. Mason has two senior boys (Rio Schmidt and Kristian Dale) and one senior girl (Margaret Lemke). We knew going into the match that Wall’s boys were their strength, but they added three solid freshmen girls that added much depth to their team.

Mason got off to a great start in doubles as the number one boys team of Schmidt and Price Ruffin pulled off a great 7-6, 6-3 win. The mixed team of Claudia Canfield and Coby Velez took a decisive 6-1,6-2 win. The number one and two doubles teams of Lemke/Traci Jordan and Kirsten Allen/Carley Chew also took wins to give Mason a 4-3 lead coming out of doubles.

Our singles play was disappointing across the board. We didn’t feel that we competed the way we are capable of competing. The kids played hard, but double faulted and made too many unforced errors against players that didn’t have any major weapons, but did a great job of getting the ball back in the court. Coby Velez added a big win at the #3 singles spot. Wins on the girls side were from Lemke, Jordan, and Allen.

Probably the most disappointing aspect of the match was that we lost four split set matches. In all four matches, Mason won the first set and then dropped the second set and then lost very close tie-breakers in three of the matches (10-8, 12-10, 14-12). These are matches that we can turn around if we get the opportunity to play Wall again.

Wall should go into the state tournament as the top seed with Mason at the #2 spot. The draws will not be made for the tournament until Thursday evening so the opponent and the location will not be known until that time. Other teams in the draw will be Brownfield, Tulia, Reagan County, Wink, Godley, San Saba, Ingram, Knippa, Brock, White Oak, Kirbyville, Franklin, East Bernard, and Schulenburg.

We hope we’ll have another great turnout for the tournament. The morning matches will start at 8:30 followed by the afternoon matches that start at 1:30. As always the semi’s and the finals will be loud and fun matches.
