100th Celebration in Harper Approaches
Wednesday, April 3, 2013 • Posted April 3, 2013

St. James Lutheran Church of Harper is celebrating its 100th year, and extends an invitation to members, friends, and family, past and present, for an April 21, 2013 gathering of memories and fellowship to honor the Lord for shepherding and protecting this church for all these years.

Former pastors and members, confirmands of the church, friends and relatives of the congregation are all invited to make this historical time a great day of celebration. There.will be much going on that day, and the favor of a reply for the meal is requested. Even without an RSVP, everyone is welcome; as with all good Lutheran meals, there will be plenty of food.

The day will begin with the artifact display opening at 9 AM and picture taking for families or confirmation classes can be had for a keepsake (at a very nominal charge).

Then, at 10 AM, the music begins! Choirs, instrumentals, and duets will be heard before the worship service begins at 10:30 AM, and the procession of pastors into the church begins. Several former pastors will be taking part, so when the service is finished, it will be a great time to catch up on old times with old friends.

Directly following the worship service, the historical marker for the church will be dedicated and unveiled. A short ceremony will be held in front of the church, where the marker is to be placed, and then lines will begin for the food service.

A catered barbecue meal is being prepared by Daniel and Linda Rech, and tickets are already on sale at $10. for adults and $5. for children ten years and younger. (830-864-4 I 93 ,church or 830-864-4526, Eileen Meyer or 830-739-2101, Peggy Ernst) Tents will be set up on the lawn with tables and chairs available for all to enjoy outdoors. In the event of rainy weather, the meal will be served and people will be seated at the spacious Gitter Hall at St. Anthony Catholic Church, just one block up the street.; If that is the. call of.the day-for rain-. the afternoon program will also take place in that hall.

Between noon and 2 PM, a photographer will again be ready to take snapshots of folks wanting to remember this day and perhaps to order for other family members. But, by 2 PM, the afternoon program will begin with recognition of confirmation classes, pastors, and founding and charter member families. There will be a short re-enactment of the church history, with a little humor thrown in, music to remember, and lots offellowship and catching up amongst old

friends.

If you wish to join St. James for the meal, please RSVP to POBox 191, Harper, TX 78631, and if you can, list all the names of those attending. Meal tickets and name tags can be picked up that day at registration. In order to give the caterer a count, give a return as early as possible. The church will welcome you whether you have RSVP’d or not--come and join in.

This milestone event will also welcome flowers and memorials to honor those past or in the present: call 830-864-4524 (Doylene Bode) to advise of this.

St. James looks forward to saluting the old church and looking forward to the new century, supported by all those in the Harper community and surrounding area.
