I’d like to thank the townspeople of Mason for their hospitality and hosting another fantastic Topaz Day.
I spent a 1/2 day out on one of the ranches and (which I’m keeping secret because I) was one of the lucky ones who found a large (2" tall) smokey quartz point. A few others also picked up similar finds, including someone who found an Indian artifact. It doesn’t get much better than this.
Sadly, my grumbling stomach called me back to town but I did get a great homemade meal (and service) at the Square Plate, and then perused the dozen or so rock vendors (nice to see the Boerne Rock shop and Enchanted Rock shop from Llano there and it saved me a trip to go see them). One vendor had a nice chunk of Mason topaz about the size of a quarter - certainly bigger than any I would’ve found, so I ended up with another souvenir..at a great price.
I always go into your lovely museum. After ogling all the topazes that have been found, this time I looked at some famous people from around your area. Next, I stepped into the Gems of the Hill Country and got to hear quite a few local stories, not to mention meeting THE Charles Covill and his daughter. Both had on some spectacular stones that he had cut.
I’m glad to hear that over a 100 people came out for the topaz hunts (that’s 10% of Mason’s population!). Some of the people that I met can’t wait til next year and are already making plans to go back up. Frankly, I wish it were less popular so that there would be more finds left for me!
I’m keeping this day reserved on my calendar for next year.
