Once again the Mason Tennis Team rolled to district championships in both boys and girls divisions. The boy’s team nosed out Sabinal by a 33-25 score while the girls dominated Junction 35-16 in team points.
Sabinal had a strong boy’s team as their boys singles player, Vicente Aguilar, defeated Mason’s Kristian Dale 7-5, 6-2 in the finals. Dale had to come back an hour later and play Center Point’s Alejandro Morales 6-4,6-7,6-3 to advance to the regional tournament.
In boy’s doubles, Price Ruffin and Rio Schmidt dominated their competition as they lost only five games in the tournament. They soundly defeated the Sabinal team in the finals 6-0,6-3. Sabinal handed Mason a defeat as they beat our #2 team of Leret Hemphill and Seth Hudson 7-5,6-3 in the semi’s. Hemphill and Hudson defeated Sabinal’s #2 team 6-3,3-6,6-3 for third place. We were disappointed as we felt that we were a better team, but we didn’t serve real well and simply missed a lot of shots we had no business missing. You only get one chance and you have to make the most of that chance…and we just didn’t get it done.
In girl’s doubles, the defending state champions, Traci Jordan and Margaret Lemke, played very well as they defeated Mason’s #2 team of Kirsten Allen and Carley Chew in the finals 6-0, 6-3. The match had some great points. The score didn’t really reflect the caliber of play that both teams showed. Allen and Chew had only lost four games going into the finals so these four young ladies dominated their competition.
Probably the match of the tournament was the late night semi-final match between Mason’s sophomore Katie Smith and Nueces Canyon senior and three time regional qualifier, Kara Sifuentes. Katie dropped the first set 6-4, but rallied back to take the 2nd set 7-5. That’s when the drama began. Sifuentes took 5-0 lead in the third on some great shots from all over the court. Katie was playing well, we just couldn’t win the points we needed. With her back to the wall, Katie started mixing up the pace and crept back into the set point by point and game by game. When the dust in Junction settled, Katie had won the next seven games to win the match and advance to the finals against Junction’s Jessey Martinez. Martinez was too much in the finals, but Katie will advance to regionals on her strong performance in the semi’s.
Mason’s mixed doubles teams dominated their competition by not losing a set thru the semi’s. In the finals, the junior team Claudia Canfield and Coby Velez defeated the fellow juniors, Nick Dyer and Caroline Hudson 6-2,6-4 and a well played finals. Dyer and Hudson then had to play a playback match against the Sabinal team that had carried Canfield/Velez to a 6-2,7-6 match in the semi’s. Nick and Caroline never let Sabinal get into the match as they destroyed them 6-0, 6-1.
The team will leave on Tuesday and compete on Wednesday and Thursday. Play will be at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station. Play will begin with boy’s singles at 8:00 on Wednesday morning and will be followed by girl’s singles, boy’s doubles, girl’s doubles and mixed doubles. Quarter-final matches should begin around 2:00 on Wednesday. The semi’s are scheduled to begin at 8:30 on Thursday followed by finals and playbacks.
This year the players will be playing for the opportunity to be the first players to play the state championships at Texas A&M University as the 3A, 2A, and 1A State Championships will in College Station for the first time. We are all excited as we will no longer have to fight the parking and the spectator unfriendly facilities at Lakeway Country Club. A&M has a great tennis facility and the kids love to play there as the past A&M coaches have always allowed us to warm up there before regionals.
Mason’s JV also performed very well with the boy’s team winning the district championship and the girls taking 2nd. The second place finish was real good considering we only had four girls and all four medaled.
