On Friday, March 22nd, Mason Junior High kicked off its season with a win over Sonora in the first round of the team tennis tournament. On Saturday, March 23rd, the team faced its toughest challenger, Kerrville in what is always a great match. Mason came out on top with a 10-8 victory. Later that evening, Mason would win the championship over Fredericksburg. This is the second year in a row that we have won our own team tournament. Members of the squad were girls Ryli Ruffin, Justyn Tedder, Sara Powell, Ella Canfield, Lanie Schmidt, Kenley Stockbridge, Margaret Graves, and alternates Sandra Duarte and Raegan Palacio. Boys playing were Slade Townsend, T.R. Kerr, Haddon Hudson, Grant Sanders, Cason Dudney, James Schwertner, Coleman Swafford, and alternates Jackson Chapman and Emanuel Martinez.

The following week, a group of players traveled to Horseshoe Bay Resort for a dual match with Lampasas and Faith Academy. The kids played tons of matches and got some really good play time in. We won the dual by unofficial counts. Those attending the dual were Haddon Hudson, James Schwertner, Coleman Swafford, Elijah Timms, Evan Dayton, Riley Pape, Kason Silerio, Mathew Finn, Chase Pawvlik, Fernando Torres, Malcolm Davidson, Leonel Blas, Ty Ellebracht, Ella Canfield, Molly Schwertner, Kendra Klaerner, Grace Chapman, Sandra Duarte, Raegan Palacio, Ali Baltierra, Shay Baker, Julie Mae Drazan, Jaclyne Grosse, and Lexie Bingham. For many, this was their first match ever and they did a fantastic job.

On Friday, April 5th, Mason hosted its annual “B” division tournament. In boys’ singles, Leonel Blas and Malcolm Davidson both won their first round matches before losing in the quarterfinals. Ty Ellebracht advanced to the semifinals in the consolation bracket before losing. In girls’ singles, Kendra Klaerner was the champion. Breana Nail advanced to the semifinals of the consolation before being knocked out by eventual consolation bracket winner, Shay Baker. Ali Baltierra also advanced to the consolation final losing to Shay. In boys’ doubles, our one team of Chase Pawvlik and Fernando Torres came away champions. Girls’ doubles also had a good tournament. The team of Julie Mae Drazan and Jenna Johnson, won their first round but then lost in the quarters. Also, teammates Lexie Bingham and Jaclyne Grosse made it to the finals of the consolation bracket.

On Saturday, April 6th, Mason hosted its annual “A” division tournament. This consists of 7th and 8th graders. There was lots of competition this year but once again, Mason stepped up. In 7th boys’ singles, Kason Silerio won his first match before losing in the quarterfinals. T.R. Kerr and Cason Dudney would meet in the finals with T.R. taking home the gold. In 7th girls’ singles, Ryli Ruffin and Ella Canfield faced each other in the finals with Ryli coming out on top for the gold. Our one 7th boys’ doubles team of Mathew Finn and Emanuel Martinez took home the consolation medal. The 7th grade girls’ doubles final was Mason vs. Mason with the team of Sandra Duarte and Raegan Palacio outlasting teammates Molly Schwertner and Grace Chapman in a close final. 8th grade tennis is always exciting. In girls singles, Justyn Tedder won gold and Sara Powell lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual 2nd place player. In 8th boys singles, Grant Sanders was defeated in the semifinals by the eventual winner. Grant took 4th place at the end of the day. Slade Townsend had two great matches. He won in the semifinals by a score of 8-6 and then lost in the finals 8-6. Slade took home the silver. The team of Haddon Hudson and James Schwertner took home the silver in 8th boys doubles while the team of Evan Dayton and Elijah Timms lost in the consolation finals. And finally, in 8th girls doubles, once again it was Mason vs. Mason. The team of Lanie Schmidt and Kenley Stockbridge ousted teammates Kody Criswell and Margaret Graves for the gold.

The weekend of April 13th the team traveled to Fredericksburg but we have no official results from that tournament.

Mason will host the junior high District Tournament on Thursday April 25th starting at 3:30pm.

This year Mason Junior High will be hosting a Lee Graham Junior/Adult Tournament on Friday May 3rd and Saturday May 4th. Junior high players are encouraged to ask local adults that play tennis to be their partner if they do not have a parent that plays.
