It’s time to begin . . . The Big Read!
The Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library invites everyone in Mason to read True Grit by Charles Portis and to participate in one Big Read activity. The project has officially begun; Mrs. Glendene Underwood’s Advanced Placement English II classes kicked off this community project by reading and discussing the book in her classes.
As the year progresses, other activities will be offered. For example, Dr. John Davis will give a program on the Texas Rangers. True Grit will be the theme of the Library Board’s float in the rodeo parade, and other events are being planned. All the local book clubs are encouraged to use True Grit as one of their selections for 2013.
For once, it’s okay to follow the crowd! According to its website, the goal of the Big Read is to “create a nation of readers”—one book and one community at a time. The library has purchased the book in digital and print formats in English and in Spanish, or you may buy your own copy, but however you do it, join in the fun!
