Hill Country Builders Award Annual $5K Scholarships to Industry Students

The Hill Country Builders Association (HCBA) awarded $5,000.00 in scholarships in their annual industry scholarship program. Builders, Remodelers, Developers, Contractors and their suppliers and vendors throughout 10 counties of the Hill Country have been awarding scholarships to graduating seniors who are committed to studying construction related fields at their annual Golf Tournament on June 7th.

Builder Golfers and two student recipients were presented to players and sponsors before they teed off at Lady Bird Golf Club in Fredericksburg. Levi Bailey of Llano High School and Elena Ramon of Mason who are both attending Texas A&M University in the field of engineering were all smiles as Leno Garza and Sue Schwarz who chair and co-chair the committee that reviews all applicants made their presentation on the 1st Hole tee box.

“We reviewed 17 senior candidate applications from Marble Falls, Fredericksburg, Johnson City, Blanco, Burnet, Llano, Kerrville, Comfort, Harper and Ingram”, explains Leno Garza who also chaired the golf event for the HCBA. “It is always a tough decision, but we were committed to find the best student from our northern territory of the Highland Lakes and of our southern territory which reaches High Schools in 7 counties.” Garza is a native of Marble Falls and works for the golf tournaments host, BMC Building Materials. “It has never been more critical to focus on the future of our industry when the economy is growing and so reliant on the strength of construction and real estate”.

Sue Schwarz a Builder from Kingsland had tears in her eyes as she shook the hands of these two students. “We have weighted criteria for our scholarships, starting with field of study, but focusing on the student’s financial need. Our scholarship funding may be the determinate of whether these students actually get to attend college, so it is this is a special day, says Schwarz through her smile.

The Hill Country Builders Association is part of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Texas Association of Builders (TAB). Executive Director Jayne Mortensen who is based in their Marble Falls office explains, “Giving back is a priority of our industry and we have been producing the scholarship golf tournament for our industry in the Hill Country for 26 years and have awarded well over $100,000.00 to our communities children. “Our industry is growing to meet the demands of the population growth and we need to foster relationships with future industry professionals and our Scholarship program is one of many programs where the industries prosperity is given back.”

The volunteer committee who runs the tournament includes: Leno Garza (Marble Falls), Sue Schwarz (Kingsland), Eric Wilson (Burnet), Dawn Russell (Kingsland), Todd Stephens (Fredericksburg), Dwight Batch (Marble Falls) and Greg Mohr (Fredericksburg).
