Texas Commission on the Arts Singer to Perform July 9 at Library
Wednesday, June 26, 2013 • Posted June 27, 2013

Joe McDermott, a nationally known children’s songwriter will perform for preschool and elementary age children at the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library on July 9 at 1:00 P.M. in the Stribling Room. Admission to the performance is free. Mr. McDermott will also be doing a presentation at 2:30 P.M. entitled “Making Music on Computers”. This workshop is for teens, but adults are also invited to attend.

The performance at the library will be a concert of Mr. McDermott’s award-winning children’s music. His program includes movement, singing and clapping along. When asked by fans what to expect from his concerts? “I always say they should expect an invasion from an outer-space ice cream ship, a friendly, but stinky encounter with a skunk, a ride on a pogo stick and a porcupine, and a wild go on a rollercoaster--all in our imaginations of course.”

The workshop for teens covers the basics of modern music production on computers. It covers many recording techniques including making “beats” on the computer, Auto-tune and the equipment necessary to record on computers. “It is a basic introduction to the modern recording studio, which in many cases has become a simple lap-top computer and a microphone” says McDermott. The workshop is geared toward teens interested in recording music or just curious about music production.

Mr. McDermott has won numerous awards for his children’s songs including the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and several Parent’s Choice and NAPPA Awards. He has written songs with Jan and Stan Berenstain (of the Berenstain Bears children’s books) and for a Michael Eisner (ex-CEO of Disney) company.

The Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Library is located at 410 Post Hill Street. The performance and workshop are both free to the public, sponsored by the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library and funded by the Texas Commission on the Arts. You may read more about Joe McDermott and listen to samples of his music at joemcdermottmusic.com
