8th Grade Boys Basketball

Lots of basketball for the 8th Grade Punchers this past week. Mason traveled to Llano last weekend for the Llano Invitational. The Punchers took on the Llano team for the first game. Llano’s victory sent the Punchers to take on St. Andrews in the second game. Llano won the first game 9 to 54, and the Punchers were defeated in the second game 20-42. Our guys played hard but were out-gunned in this tournament.

Monday the Punchers hit the road again to take on the Cougars from Christoval. Mason jumped to an early lead in period one leading 12-3, then finished out the first half 18-6. After the break Mason tacked on 11 points in the third period while holding Christoval to only 2 points. In period 4 Mason scored 4 to the Cougars 7 finishing out the score 33-15.

The Punchers then took to the road again headed to Christoval for the District Tournament. Mason took on Irion County in the first game. Each team battled in every period which made for an exciting game to watch.

The Punchers lead in period one 10 to 6 then finished out the half 23-15. Irion County made up some of their lost ground in period three outscoring the home boys 4-7. In period four, the Punchers settled down to some really good defense then out scored their opponent 9-7, finishing out the came 36-29.

The second opponent in the tournament was Miles. Miles had previously beaten the Punchers by twenty points earlier in the season. Mason played a very good defensive game. Miles lead in period one 4-10, then held the lead at half-time 12-21. In period three the Punchers outscored Miles 8-7, then each team scored 10 points in period four.Final score 30-38.

This loss sent the Punchers to the third place portion of the bracket aligning them with Menard. Menard had beaten the Punchers earlier in the year by two points in over-time.

Period one ended with Mason slightly ahead 6-5, followed by a half-time score of 17-14. Menard picked up a little in the third period outscoring the Punchers 4-5, then again in the final stanza 8-9. The Punchers held on for the victory 29-26 finishing out the tournament in third place.
