Rio Schmidt participated on the South All Star Squad in the Big Country FCA Myrle Greathouse All Star Classic Football Game at Abilene’s Shotwell Stadium on June 8th.
Although the South lost the contest 27-14, they had pulled within 3 going into the 4th quarter thanks to Rio’s team leading 6 receptions for 51 yards in the 3rd Quarter from his slot back position. He also punted 4 times for an average of 47 yards per punt, kicked an extra point, and had 3 kickoffs, 2 for touchbacks.
His greatest experience that All Star Week was being nominated by his team as the Speaking Captain for the South.
His thanks goes out to the Mason Coaching Staff for nominating Rio to play in the game and a special thanks to Coach Ragsdale and big Fat Boy friend Korey Zavala for being in attendance at the game.
Rio leaves the first week in August to report at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, for the start of his NCAA football career. He will be competing for a starting job as a slot back receiver as well as kicking and punting duties.
When asked about his thoughts after the game in Abilene, he just said, “It was a great day to be a Puncher.”
