Two quilts, created by Mason County artist and Artisan Gallery owner, Sue Kaan will be on display and up for silent auction beginning today at the Mason Bank. Sue donated the quilts to raise funds for a new fellowship hall for the Hilda United Methodist Church. The three local banks agreed to display the quilts and provide a locale to place bids. Last week the Commercial Bank played host to the quilts. Bids for the quilts can be made at the Mason Bank until July 23rd and at the First Bank Central Texas from July 24th until the last day to bid, July 31st.
The quilts are beautiful to look at and beautiful to wrap oneself up in. Both quilts are useful as a throw or to decorate a wall. When Sue Kaan designs a quilt, she says it is almost like creating a painting. One of the quilts up for auction is the result of Sue finding a beautiful Parrot motif batik. The jewel-like colors inspired her to surround it with complimentary fabrics. The quilt is completely hand quilted, a lengthy process required for a softer and handmade appearance. With this quilt, Sue hopes to convey rich color, a hand-crafted look and good design.
The second quilt is made in the so-called “Modern Quilting” design. The emphasis is fabric placement and quilting. Sue used machine sewing to create more drama with the outline of a fern motif on this quilt, with the rest of the materials in soft colors and hand stitched. Sue points out that this quilt has a wonderful drape and it has been washed and dried which also gives texture. The quilt is an experiment in an almost oriental look and feel.
It is hard to put price tags on quilts like these. Sue is hoping her work will raise money this time to help build a new fellowship hall for the church she is a member of, Hilda United Methodist. The current fellowship hall is the old parsonage, built in 1900. It houses, and will continue to house the pastor and church offices. With the church growing in attendance, there is no longer one single room large enough to hold everyone attending church meetings, dinners and other special events.
The Mason Bank is located on the southeast corner of the Mason Square. Lobby hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The bid for the quilts starts at $75.00 for each. People may bid on one quilt or both. A bid can be placed at each bank, as often as desired.
