July 13-14 was the weekend for the 2013 Couples’ Tournament. There were 33 couples from San Angelo, San Saba, Midland, Big Lake, Early, Spicewood, Rochelle, Eldorado, Snyder, Christoval, Mineral Wells and Mason. The Baggett family was well represented, with four family couples.
The team of Albert and Heidi Rincon from Mineral Wells shot everyone out of the water with a two-day total of 116 to win the championship flight. They also won first in the day money. Rick and Sandra Baskin from San Angelo had a 127 to win second and also second in day money. Michael Valdez and Carla Landes (Brady) had a 130 to tie with Wayne Mataska’s team (Brady). Michael putted in the birdie shot on hole 1 for third place. Mataska’s team settled for fourth.
Skip Priess (San Angelo) and Amy Pearson (Brady) had 132, Kelly and Kelly Baggett (San Angelo) had a 136, Kenny and Becky Baggett (Big Lake) had a 134 and Jim and Becky Bailey (Christoval) had a 133. Just a little history record, Bobbie Williams grew up in the same town as Jim’s mother. Small world.
The first flight was won by James Toeppich and Connie Stockbridge of Mason with a two-day total of 137. They also won first place in day money.
Dane and Shelly Mahan (San Saba) had second in day money but lost out on placement by one stroke scoring a 142. Second place had a tie between David and Jamye Graves (Brady) and Abel Ledezma and Candice Ledezma (Brady) with a total of 141. They split the winnings. Rick and Ginger Waldrop (Spicewood) had 144 to tie with Zane and Kayla Brandenberger (Brady). Brad and Kinsey Childs had a 147 (Brad said Kinsey forgot to show up on Saturday), and David and Darlene Gray (Big Lake) had a 149 to close out the first flight.
The second flight was taken by Lannie and Cathy Baggett (Eldorado) with a two-day total of 144. They also won first in day money. In second with a total of 146 was Tom and Brenda Gray (Eldorado). They also won second in day money. Ronnie and Gloria Baggett (Big Lake) had 149, Bobbie and Bobby Williams (Brady) had 155. Charlie Bush and Tina Myers (Brady) and Thomas and Sara Williams (Snyder) had 159.
The third flight first place was Sherry and Marty Bentson (Rochelle) with a total of 155. They also won first place in day money. Second place was Don and Janet Crooks (Brady) with a 158 and second in day money. Third place was Roy Short and Liz Rudder (Brady) with a 163. Garry and Debbie Goff (Big Lake) had 164, J.T. Owens and Kendra Larson (Brady) had 168.
The Lame Duck was won by William and Carrie Day (Big Lake) with a 166, Marvin and Suzzie Smith (Brady) had a 172 with Jim Quinn (Brady) and Holly Crooks (San Angelo) scoring a 173. Jack and Skylar Blackman (Midland) had a 177. Jim Quinn had a perfect shot on hole 8. It was straight up and almost straight down making a beautiful water circle in the middle of the lake. Holly had to carry him on hole 8.
The closest-to-the-pin on 3/12 for the men was Lannie Baggett, and Jamye Graves took it on 8/17 for the women. Lannie was 5’9” from the hole and Jamye was 11’. Closest-to-the-pins was sponsored by the Brady Golf Association. The closest-to-the-center-line on 5/14 was sponsored by Don and Janet Crooks and was won by Connie Stockbridge. The closest-to-the-crooked-line was won by Becky Baggett and sponsored by the Pro Shop.
It has been said that Curtis knows what will happen if he ever throws a club. Go Robin. Big Lake will be having their couples’ tournament on Labor Day weekend.
