Big Kickoff for Junior High Football
Wednesday, September 18, 2013 • Posted September 23, 2013

The 2013 Jr High football season finally got underway last Thursday night at the Puncherdome as Mason hosted Comfort in both 7th and 8th grades. There was a great crowd on hand to see the season opener and were treated to some good football.

It’s always interesting when the 7th grade takes the field for the first time. This 7th grade team is heads above many of the teams from years ago. They have had experienced the youth football experience as well as having had Coach Burns in 6th grade PE which has enabled them to get a head start over teams of the past. They already have a better concept of the game itself and how one player’s role is dependent upon another’s role. This is a very valuable lesson at a young age.

The 7th grade Punchers started the night in a scrimmage format as both number one teams got ten offensive and ten defensive plays followed by the number two teams getting seven and seven. Mason number ones held the Bobcats to one first down in their first ten plays and then punched their way down the field and scored on a good run by Tyson Keller. Comfort scored on the number two on their seventh play after the Punchers put up a good defensive stand.

Comfort took the kickoff in the live 15 minute quarter and controlled the ball for the first ten minutes, but was unable to score as the defense stiffen behind good defensive play by Chet Weitz and Rudy Martinez. Mason finally got the ball back and systematically marched down the field with a balanced run and passing attack and scored the only score with 1:50 left in the game on a nice run by Tyson Keller. The two point conversion failed and Mason led 6-0. The defense was able to hold Comfort until the final buzzer.

The 8th grade picked up right where the 7th grade left off as they stopped Comfort on their first drive and took their first possession of the game straight down the field and scored on a nice pass play from Bode McMillan (although I called him Ty throughout most the game…Ty was QB in my first JH game with Mason a few years ago) to Truman Magnus.

The defense continued to play strong and aggressive and continued to shut out Comfort. Mason tacked on two more scores by Jake Comey and Americo Alvarez as Mason posted a 22-0 lead late in the fourth quarter. Comfort was able to mount a late drive and scored to bring the final score to 22-7.

We were very pleased with our Jr High players as they were much more physical than what we even anticipated. Usually this physicality doesn’t appear until later in the season. We have high hope for these two teams. This week the 8th grade will play Christoval there at 5:00 while the 7th grade will travel to Lago Vista for their first out of town game at 5:00.
