Truth be told I think every day should be Coffee Appreciation Day, but here in the US we actually have a day that is marked on the calendar for this specific occasion. September 29th has played host to National Coffee Day for many years now, and this week we are bringing it and a few coffee facts to Mason!
Did you know that coffee originated in Africa circa 800 A.D.? Ethiopian goat herders would snack on the beans of the Coffea tree as they tended their flocks. The beans eventually traveled to Arabia where coffee as we know it today was born. For about 600 years no coffee beans were sprouted outside of Africa or Arabia since all imported beans were boiled prior to importing. Then one day someone got the bright idea to smuggle some fertile beans out of the country strapped to their belly and started the agricultural expansion of the world’s most popular beverage. Being from Texas we can appreciate the fact that among natural commodities, coffee has a monetary value surpassed only by oil.
Coffee was nicknamed Java in the late 17th century, when The Dutch began the first successful European coffee plantation on their island colony of Java in Indonesia. Today the Java we know and love is grown, harvested, roasted and brewed all over the world. Coffee can be roasted dark, light or anywhere in between. Flavors can be added while roasting to enhance the natural flavors. Coffee has evolved into an extensive laundry list of beverages, including the standard Cappuccino, Café Mocha and Espresso but also interestingly named beverages such as Kopi Susu, Green Eye and Red Tux. Did you know that coffee is not only hot brewed? That’s right, coffee can be cold brewed as well. The benefit of cold brewed coffee is that it is 67% less acidic than hot brewed coffee. This produces a richer, smoother tasting coffee.
In recent months, Topaz Confections, located on the Mason Square, started cold brewing its Topaz Blend, a mix of medium-roast organic Mexican and Brazilian beans, for iced coffee drinks. Topaz Blend is also brewed as a traditional hot coffee. In addition, Topaz Confections is now serving hot and cold espresso drinks, including cappuccinos, lattes, mochas and frappés. Their espresso beverages are brewed from a dark-roasted blend of organic coffee beans from Mexico, Peru and Ethiopia.
In celebration of National Coffee Day, Topaz Confections is offering a “Bring a Friend” special on September 27th and 28th. Bring a friend on either Friday or Saturday and get 2 coffee beverages for the price of one (equal or lesser value). Topaz Confections is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Happy National Coffee Day!
