Seventh Grade Football Takes Tough Loss
Wednesday, September 25, 2013 • Posted September 26, 2013

The only game for the Mason Puncher football program last week was in Lago Vista as the 7th grade Punchers made their first out of town trip on the “long and winding road” to Lago. With rain cancelling all the 8th grade game in Christoval, the 7th grade got center attention.

Prior to the game, the Lago coaches requested that we play the first string the first and third quarters and the second string during the second and fourth quarters. So Mason was fortunate to win the opening toss and elected to receive the kickoff. The offense systematically marched down the field and scored on a short run by Chet Weitz. The point after failed. Mason then held Lago and again marched down the field and once again scored on a nice 45 yard run by Tyson Keller. The Vikings quickly got on the board by returning the kickoff back 84 yards and then converted on the two point conversion.

The second unit came in and also punched in a score as Zach Norman took it across the goal line on a two yard run. Lago got the ball back after the kickoff and marched down the field, but the second defense stiffened and kept the Vikings out as the buzzer ended the half with Mason leading 22-8.

The fourth quarter started off with Lago receiving the kickoff. They ate up most of the quarter and scored with about two minutes left. The first unit started to march down the field, but was denied a first down by a questionable ruling at the 50 yard line. Lago then moved down the field and scored to bring the score to 22-14. After a pair of Mason fumbles Lago found itself with a 30-22 lead and the ball with only minutes left on the clock.

It was then that the Mason defense corralled the Viking running back on the Mason sideline. While the Lago running back was struggling for more yards, Mason’s Josh Fluhmann stripped the ball from the back and raced 55 yards for the score. Mason went for two by running a boot around the left side. The play worked perfectly however we were flagged for a hold on the opposite side of the field. The next attempt failed so Mason found itself down 30-28 with seconds remaining. We went for the onside kick, but were unable to recover the bobbled ball.

We were extremely proud of these young men as they continued to fight until the final buzzer went off. They played their hearts out on both sides. We got to see all the kids play a lot and saw some good plays on both the first and second teams. Shiloh Dickenson, Zach Norman, and Carlos Watson all made tackles for losses to keep the Punchers in game defensively.

Mason’s 8th will play San Saba Thursday at 5:00 here while the 7th grade will be in Junction playing at 5:00. The JV will follow at 6:00. Please come out and support the sub varsity teams.
