Mason Tennis Starts Fall Season
Wednesday, September 25, 2013 • Posted September 26, 2013

The 2013-14 Mason Tennis Team travelled to Fredericksburg to play their first duals of the new season last Friday. The Punchers and Cowgirls lined up against 4A Floresville in the first match and then squared off against Hondo. Several of the normal varsity players were unable to make the matches due to college testing and prior engagements, but those that made the trip got in some valuable play.

Against Floresville, Mason played nine freshmen, five sophomores, and one senior. Lots of young players got their first taste of high school tennis. On the most part, the young Punchers and Cowgirls played well and made a good showing. We were short handed in the first dual on the girl’s side as only five girls were able to be in Fredericksburg that morning. Those girls did a great job of winning both of their doubles matches as well as the mixed doubles.

Justyn Tedder was the only Mason player to win both their singles and doubles against Floresville. Kenley Stockbridge came back from dropping her opening set 5-7 to split with her opponent, but lost in the tiebreaker for the third.

The boys team were soundly defeated by a very tough team, but again when you are playing four freshmen in the top six, it is hard to win much against a veteran team of juniors and seniors. These kids have to make the jump from playing in the 14 year old, Jr High division to playing 17-18 year olds. I was very pleased with the performance of our kids.

The afternoon match was much closer as Mason picked up Seniors Price Ruffin, Traci Jordan, Claudia Canfield as well as Junior Katie Smith after they finished the ACT and a SAT prep class. Once again the girls won all three of their doubles matches losing only five games total. We also won all but one singles match. Mason dropped the mixed match which meant we had to win at least one boys match. The only set the boys were able to pick up against a strong Hondo team was when freshman Slade Townsend came back from dropping the opening set 6-0 to capture the second 6-2. Hondo was able to pull out the tiebreaker 10-7 in a excellent played match by the Mason Freshman.

Overall, we were very pleased with the effort of our kids. This was our first trip out and many of the kids that played haven’t as much as held a racquet since the Dr Pepper this summer. The kids competed well, we just need lots of matches and time on the courts. These fall matches should pay great dividends in the spring. Mason’s next match will be against the Billies, one of the top teams in 3A this year; a team that handled both Floresville and Hondo very easily. We will play them on October 12th and again be in Fredericksburg.
