Al Dreyer is a native Texas but former employment with the Department of Defense Air Force resulted in frequent assignments within the United States, Panama, and Germany. Always interested in art, he had myriad opportunities to visit museums, private galleries, and showrooms as well as informal “sidewalk” exhibitions.
Life activities including a military tour, college, work, and family were priority, but retirement in 1993 allowed time to try painting himself. In 1997, a night watercolor course pointed the way. Al continues to work in this medium. He paints predominately from photographs he has taken.
Al finds the actual pleasure of viewing a painting, whether landscape, portrait, or still life, lies in the details and memories that have an emotional effect on the viewer. “One does not simply see clouds in a painting,” says Al, “but rather shapes, color, mood, and beauty. That is the true meaning of any painting.”
