Friday night's game against the Ozona Lions saw the Punchers rack up their second district win; but, it was not an easy victory.
The first quarter saw the Punchers bolt from the gate, and fans may have mistakenly thought that the Ozona team would go down easily. On the second play of the game, the Punchers' Raul Silguero ran 63 yards for the opening Puncher touchdown. Go Chanraing kicked the extra point, and the score was 7-0 with 11:38 left in the quarter.
Only a few minutes later, Mason would score their second run of the night after a long drive downfield. Elliott Bibb made the final carry. The conversion was unsuccessful, and the score was 13-0 with 8:40 left in the quarter.
Mason would score again in the first quarter when Silguero completed a Mason drive with a final three-yard dive. Chanraing was spot on, and the score was 20-0 with 5:53 left in the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Ozona starting to push back against the Punchers; but, not before Luis Castillo carried in the ball on a 10-yard run for the Punchers two minutes into play. Chanraing hit between the uprights, and the score was 27-0 with 10:01 left in the half.
For the rest of the half, the Punchers would have trouble holding back the Lions. Late in the half, Ozona pushed the Punchers back on their own goal line, and prompted a safety that finally put them on the scoreboard 27-2 with 2:54 remaining in the half.
A few minutes later, Ozona finally made their own score on a short 4-yard run and followed up with the two-point conversion to put the score going into the half at 27-10.
The third quarter became a test of wills, and it looked as if neither team would be able to get past the other. Then, with only seconds remaining in the period, the Punchers pushed into Lion territory and Elliott Bibb mad the final 1-yard carry to score. In a rarity, Chanraing's kick wobbled wide, and the score was 33-10 with 0:06 left in the quarter.
The fourth quarter was just as tough as the third had been. Mason's team seemed to be attracting the officials' flags and repeatedly had to repeat plays to make up lost yardage.
A few minutes into the last quarter, Ozona made their final score of the evening on a two-yard run. The two-point conversion was good, and the score stood at 33-18 with 8:39 left in the game.
The Punchers knew they had a lead that would be difficult to overcome; but, they also knew that they needed a greater margin in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Mason's final score, and the final score of the night, came on an Elliott Bibb pass to Miguel Castillo who carried in the ball 69-yards. Chanraing iced the kicked, and the final score was 40-18.
The last six minutes of the game remained a tough contest; but, the Punchers were able to walk away with their second District win, and the Lions were able to walk away knowing they played a competitive game.
The Friday sees the Punchers on the road to Junction. They will take on the Eagles in Junction, with game time at 7:30 p.m.
