Dorothy Nell “Dottie” Ramsey, nee Mosley, passed away in San Antonio, TX on her 92nd birthday, October 29, 2013, born on that day in 1921 in Waco, TX. She and her husband Max E. Ramsey owned property in Mason with Dick Stengel Jr. and spent significant time in the community from 1980 until his death in 1998.
The little girl, born Dorothy Nell Mosley in Waco, TX, who knocked on back doors to visit neighbors despite her mother’s admonitions to stay in the yard, grew up to be Donnie, the gregarious grandmother who amazed her granddaughters with her ability to drive across Odessa, timing the lights so she never had to stop at an intersection. Her sense of timing was a point of pride, which extended to timing as she told jokes and sprinkled them into speeches she made to music and garden club groups. She even inspired a batch of oatmeal and glue cookies one of her granddaughters served to her teacher, but that story stayed under wraps for many years!
Dottie always wanted family and friends to gather and share good food and good times, so she and the family often hosted friends of all ages in large backyard barbeques that extended into cool summer West Texas evenings with joke and storytelling as a main event. Trained as a dietician, she was a legendary cook who specialized in foreign-inspired cuisine and caramel-oozing pecan pies, made from their home-grown nuts. In later years, the family gathered at property in Mason, TX, a hunting lease which became a “home away from home.”
Services will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 17, 2013, at the Lost Creek Vineyard tasting room, located at 1129 Ranch Road 2233, Sunrise Beach, TX 78643. The family welcomes flowers and requests any memorials in lieu of flowers be made to the Friends of the Andrews County Library (109 N.W. 1st Street, Andrews, TX 79714) or the Globe Theater of the Great Southwest (2308 Shakespeare Road, Odessa, TX 79761).
She is survived by her three children, Paige Ramsey-Palmer (San Antonio, TX), Carolyn Ramsey Cole and partner William G. Miller (San Pablo, CA), and Max Eldon Ramsey Jr. and wife Carla Newbrough Ramsey (Marble Falls, TX); seven granddaughters and eight great grandchildren.
