“Granny Nell” Margurite Mcsherry Wilhelm passed away on November 15, 2013, at the age of 97. Nell was born August 6, 1916, to Tom McSherry and Phenie Robertson McSherry in Tyrone, New Mexico.

At a young age, Nell moved with her family to Menard, Texas. Later in life, she moved to Austin where she worked for the State Comptroller for 20 years and then retired in Mason, but Menard was always home to her. Beginning at Grace Lutheran Church in Menard as a Sunday School Teacher, Nell made time for the Lord daily. Her Bible was always open as was her heart. In Mason, she was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and would listen to the radio broadcast on Sundays when she couldn’t attend, never missing a sermon! Nell loved to bake.

She was famous for her pies, her fudge, and her “wrapped candy” that everyone looked forward to on the Holidays. She would always say that they were made with love, and they were if you knew the hours she spent picking up pecans and shelling each one by hand. Nell would have Ginger Snaps for the grandkids and who could forget her hot sauce. Nell was always busy working in her yard and tending to her beautiful flowers. She enjoyed walking, playing cards and letting all of us know what a Champion Bridge player she was by showing off her trophy.

Among some of Nell’s travel, her most memorable was the Alaskan Cruise with her kids and her “Special niece, Gayla.” Nell loved her family and always looked forward to visits and phone calls every night, after the Wheel of Fortune of course. She would tell stories about her growing up and about her brothers calling her “Nelly Bow” because of the big bows her mother would make her wear and her story about her ruptured appendix at the age of 7, miles away from any doctor. She was always such a strong woman. “Granny Nell” will be missed for her strength, her faith, her heart, and her love for family and friends.

Nell is survived by her children; Johanna Hofmann and husband Wayne of Mason, Elfrieda Sanders and husband Robert of Grandbury, and John Wilhelm of Arlington, grandchildren; Wayne Carl and wife Tana, Rebecca and husband Buddy, Fritzie and husband Aron, Carla, and Erika and husband Andrew, great grandchildren; Jeramy, Patrick, Ryan, Dyllan , Levi, Ashleigh, Kaelynn, Rylie, and Charlie, sister-n-law; Iva Lee McSherry of Menard.

Nell is preceded in death by her brothers, Roy McSherry, Tommy McSherry, Ben McSherry, Clay McSherry, and sisters Jerry Taylor and Alice Miller.

Family request Memorials be made to the West Texas Boys Ranch.
