Erin Haley placed 2nd in the West Texas Cupcake Battle at Robert E. Lee High School in Midland on Saturday, November 9th. The event was sponsored by the Hospitality Educators Association of Texas (H.E.A.T) and was open to students who are currently enrolled in Family and Consumer Science classes from Regions 15, 18, and 19. Twelve students entered the competition and were required to bring 1 dozen prepared cupcakes for the initial round of judging. Four professionals in the culinary industry judged the entries on Best Cake, Best Icing, Most Interesting, Most Technical, Best Piping, and Best Presentation. In the initial round, Erin won medals for Best Icing and Best Presentation. Erin was chosen among the top 6 students to progress to the final round in which students baked their cupcakes from scratch, on site, in a two hour time period. Erin placed second with her Flora Mae Cupcakes. In addition to 3 metals and a trophy, she also won a new set of mixing bowls, measuring cups and spoons, and decorating supplies. Erin would like to thank Nancy Wooldridge and Jim Hoffman for their support and allowing her to use their Topaz Confections recipe. Erin will be representing Mason High School at the State Cupcake Battle at Allen High School in Allen, Texas in the spring.
