Pouring rain and cold weather did not prevent the Mason faithful from traveling to Leander last Friday for the playoff matchup between Mason and Shiner. It would be a tough night for the Punchers as they ended their 2013 season with a 13-14 loss to the Comanches.
During the first quarter, both teams had to deal with temperatures hovering at the freezing mark, while pouring rains and occasional sleet pelted the field. Neither team would be able to push far enough to score during that opening period.
Shortly into the second quarter, the Punchers made a determined push downfield and Elliot Bibb was able to make the final carry on the first score of the night. Go Chanraing kicked the extra point, and the score was 7-0 with 9:13 left to play in the half.
No other scores would go on the board the first half. Though the rain was easing up, the wet field conditions and the cold wind hampered the attempts by both teams to make any progress.
After halftime, and an opportunity for the players to warm up and gather their strength, the third quarter saw some determined playing by both teams.
Late in the quarter, Shiner got off a long pass play and was able to score, though they didn't complete the extra point attempt, and the score was 7-6 with 3:14 left in the quarter.
The Punchers responded quickly, with Elliot Bibb getting off a long pass to Seth Hudson for a 79-yard touchdown run. The extra point attempt failed, and the score was 13-6 with 1:56 left to play in the third quarter.
A short time into the fourth quarter, Shiner pushed into Mason's end of the field and finally completed a short drive across the goal. The Comanches went for, and were successful, in getting the two-point conversion. The score was 14-13 with 10:10 left in the game.
A scoring run by Mason got called back on penalty, and Mason was unable to put any more crucial points on the board before the final whistle, thus ending the 2013 season.
