Robert C. “R.C.” Zesch passed away December 8, 2013, in San Angelo, Texas, one month from his 90th birthday. He was born January 8, 1924, in Mason County.

Visitation was from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10 at Mason Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 11 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason with burial following at Gooch Cemetery.

R. C. was born to Robert and Milda Klaerner Zesch in Mason County. When his parents died at a young age he and his sister Elvie were adopted and raised by Herbert and Emma Gross Zesch, family kin who had no children.

He went to Mason ISD but never graduated from high school because he did not pass an English literature class. He said he just could not get into “Romeo and Juliet” and he was not going back to school just for that class.

R. C. served his country in the U.S. Navy for almost two years during World War II aboard the U.S. Livingston in the Pacific. After the war he went back home to ranch in Mason County.

R. C. married Mildred Heimann on November 27, 1947, at Holy Ghost Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg, Texas. They lived and ranched together in Mason county for 36 years. They moved to the Calf Creek Community in McCulloch County near Brady in 1983 where they continued to ranch and work side by side. After Mildred’s death on September 13, 2008, R.C. stayed on the ranch and continued to be active until earlier this year. He was slowed down considerably when he was thrown from a horse in the fall of 2010 and suffered broken ribs and shoulder and a cracked tailbone.

“Papa”, as he was known to the grandkids and great-grandkids, really enjoyed living and raising cattle and angora goats in the Hill Country of Texas. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing a good game of dominoes, especially “42.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred and nephew Paul Donop. He is survived by his son Bobby Zesch and wife Sherri of San Angelo, sister Elvie Donop and husband Herbert of Mason, grandchildren Brandon Zesch and wife Misty, Brandi Zesch Braden and husband Brandon of Wall, Allison Zesch Woods and husband Brenton of Stillwater, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren Makenna Braden, Makalee Braden, Sutton Braden, Avery Zesch and Channing Zesch of Wall; Lairyn Kate Zesch of Stillwater.

Pallbearers were Larry Donop, James Donop, Tim Schmidt, Doug Kuhlmann, Ron Kuhlmann, James Lee Heimann, David Heimann and David Klett.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 26, Mason, TX 76856 or to the charity of your choice.

“All I know how to do is work. The Lord will take care of the rest”.

R. C. Zesch
