Our FREE SPAY AND NEUTER CAMPAIGN continues and here are a few statistics from 2012. Second Chance has spayed 25 female cats and kittens. Now this may not seem like a huge number but here are the facts. One pair of cats can produce 3 litters each year and, for the sake of this article, we will say that each litter consists of 4 kittens, two of which are female. So at the end of the first year there are 12 kittens, 6 females and 6 males. One might think…..”OK. That is not so bad.”
However, at the end of the 2nd year those 6 female kittens and the original pair will have produced 84 kittens. This is getting pretty serious. At the end of 3 years, those 42 female kittens and the original pair will have produced 588 new kittens. That is really BAD. But here is the real kicker. At the end of the 4th year, there is the very real possibility of 4116 new kittens!!!!!
If you multiply that number by the 25 female cats we have spayed in 2013, the birth of – hold onto your hats – 102,900 kittens has been prevented.
We will certainly grant you that not all of these kittens may survive and that there may be more males in a litter, although there could be more females. Don’t forget the fact that a male cat can be responsible for FAR more than 3 litters each year.
Indeed numbers are deceiving. Let’s all work together to get every pet cat in Mason spayed or neutered. To get your pet cat (or dog) spayed or neutered for FREE, please call 347-6929 or 347-5598.
