The Mason tennis team advanced to the state finals last weekend in Austin. The finals match was rained out and postponed until March 22nd. Mason will play Brock in the finals in Lampasas at high noon.
Mason advanced to the state tournament after winning the regional championships with wins over Sonora 18-1 and over rival Wall 10-4. The team traveled to Austin last Friday to play Brazos in the first round. Mason won that match 18-1 and was able to utilize all 24 players that attended the tournament.
All 24 also competed in the quarters as Mason dominated San Saba 19-0. We also were able to complete five extra matches that Mason also won. Normally, only two duals are played each day, but due to the threat of rain on Saturday, the tournament director instructed us to play the semi-finals match against an always tough Reagan County.
The Owls entered the tournament as the #4 seeds and had just defeated Ingram 10-4 in their quarterfinal match. Mason swept the girls doubles and mixed as well as the #1 boys doubles match to take a commanding 5-2 lead. The Punchers and Cowgirls then won 10 of the twelve singles matches to advance to the finals with a 15-4 victory.
Mason will play a very strong Brock team in the finals. Brock and Mason played last year in the semi-finals and had a great match. We lost three seniors last year and they only lost one. They also picked up the coaches daughter who is a 14 super champ. This will make their girls team much stronger.
Brock defeated Wall in the semi’s 10-6 winning all the girls doubles matches as well as the top four singles matches. This was the same thing Mason did with Wall. Wall’s boys defeated Brock’s doubles teams 3-0, but lost the top three singles matches. Mason boys doubles lost all three matches to Wall, but came back to win three of the top four singles matches. Brock lost in the mixed doubles while Mason defeated Wall.
This really illustrates how even this dual will be. Mason will be playing with nine seniors. Claudia Canfield, Carley Chew, Damian DelToro, Nick Dyer, Leret Hemphill, Caroline Hudson, Traci Jordan, Price Ruffin, and Coby Velez will be our seniors. Our lone junior is Katie Smith. Sophomores are Kirsten Allen, James Durst, Sam Dyer, Luke Gillespie, Jacob Harris, Seth Hudson, and Monaco Schmidt. We also have several freshmen that will be playing for their first state championship. Those players are Kody Criswell, Sara Powell, Lanie Schmidt, James Schwertner, Kenley Stockbridge, Justyn Tedder, and Slade Townsend.
After taking off a few days, Mason will workout next week and play in the Fredericksburg tournament on Thursday and Friday, March 20-21. Then the varsity players will drive to Lampasas to play for their 12th straight team championship. Mason currently has 22 state championships since team tennis began in 1982. They have only had 10 years without a state championship and finished 2nd six times, 3rd three times, 8th one time, and only one time failed to qualify for the state championships (that being in 2001).
