LifeStraw™ … Bringing Clean Water to Africa One Life at a Time
Wednesday, April 9, 2014 • Posted April 9, 2014

Stop and reflect on the multitude of ways you use water every day – drinking, cooking, washing, providing water for pets and livestock, watering the lawn, garden or crops. The list goes on and on. Even in the drought conditions we’re experiencing in this area, we are still blessed that the water we use for daily living is clean and available when we turn on the nearest faucet. Clean water is key to a healthy life!

The availability of clean water is a major challenge in many regions of Africa. Some people go thirsty, others drink contaminated water and become ill. The United Nations estimates that someone dies from lack of clean water in Africa every 15 seconds. In today’s world, there’s simply no reason for anyone to die for lack of clean water. Wells and filtration systems to tackle this issue are under construction, but these projects take time and money.

This is where you come in and can help make a difference!

Water for Africa, a nonprofit group based in Round Rock, Texas, was founded to help provide clean water to people living in the Horn of Africa. Their goal is to raise money to help refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya that border Somalia. Working with partners, Lutheran World Relief and Catholic Relief Services, the organization will provide LifeStraw™ personal filtering devices for short-term relief.

According to Water for Africa, LifeStraw is a plastic personal filtration system with no moving parts that filters out 99.999% of all impurities. It is safe, effective and can be used like a straw to drink through, or water can be poured through it.

LifeStraws cost less than $10 each, do not need electricity to operate, require no replacement parts, and can provide a full year’s supply of clean water. Each unit is rated to filter at least 750 liters of water, which has been tested and proven.

Why is this a big deal? The lesson from the Good Samaritan is that we are all neighbors and God wants us to care for everyone. Here is your chance!

St. Paul Lutheran Church is collecting donations for LifeStraws during the month of April. If you would like to donate to this worthwhile endeavor, stop by our church office at 104 Magnolia Street or call 347-5582. You can also learn more about LifeStraw and Water for Africa and view pictures at
