District Academic Champions for 2014

Sacrifice and commitment by Mason High School students and academic coaches earned MHS the 2014 academic championship. Competing against 11 district schools Mason High captured the District 29-A Spring Meet title. When points from all academic events and one act play were awarded MHS scored 395 points well ahead of second place Harper with 317 points. 70 plus students from all classifications made contributions to the 2014 academic program. 23 students placed in the top 4 in their academic events. To advance to the regional contest, which will be held May 2nd at Blinn in Brenham, Texas, a student must have finished in one of the top 3 positions. 4th place finishers advance as alternates. 1st place and “Wild Card” teams also advance to regional.

District competition started in February when Mason hosted District CX debate. Mason earned points with the top 4 four teams. The top 2 teams competed at State in March. Finishing 1st through 4th against strong district competition from Junction and Medina were the following students:

Monaco Schmidt and Luke Gillespie-3rd

Luiz Castillo and James Durst-4th

Mason earned first place team honors in speaking and second place team points for literary criticism, mathematics, science, and spelling/ vocabulary. The current events team finished in second place and will advance as the “Wild Card” team.
