Mason Junior High Tennis Off to Successful Season
Wednesday, April 16, 2014 • Posted April 18, 2014

Since our last update, the Mason Junior High Tennis team has been extremely busy. We have participated in the local tennis-a-thon, a four team dual with Fredericksburg, Boerne North, and Boerne South, and competed in the Fredericksburg Invitational tournament. In Fredericksburg, Mason took 25 players to compete in the invitational on April 5th. In the 7th grade divisions, Mason had Corbin Norris place second in boys singles, Ethan Powell and Tyson Keller first in boys doubles, Kate Gillespie second in girls singles, Ruby Magnus third, and Tessa Guice advanced to the consolation semifinals. The team of Sloan Townsend and Bailey Taylor placed first in 7th girls’ doubles and the team of Victoria Baltierra and Reagan Standard placed 3rd. Also participating in this event was the team of Alexis Hernandez and Natalia Zapata. In the 8th grade division, Mason had Ryli Ruffin place 1st in girls’ singles, Molly Schwertner 2nd and also competing in this division was Raegan Palacio. T.R. Kerr defeated teammate Cason Dudney in 8th grade boys singles and fellow teammate Leonel Blas advanced to the consolation semi-finals. In 8th grade boys doubles, Kason Silerio and Emanuel Martinez placed 2nd and Fernando Torres and Mathew Finn placed 3rd. In 8th grade girls doubles the team of Julie Mae Drazan and Sarah Williams won their first match and then faced the #1 seeded team in the quarterfinals. They did not win but played exceptionally well taking the #1’s to a tiebreaker.

On Friday and Saturday April 11th and 12th, Mason Junior High tennis traveled to Kerrville for their team tournament. Each team is comprised of the top 8 boys and girls in 7th and 8th grade combined. Just like high school team tennis, the first team to win 10 matches advances to the next round. Players participate in a doubles match and then singles. In the first round Friday afternoon, Mason played Kerrville’s B team and won the match 10-0. On Saturday morning, Mason stopped in Fredericksburg to play them in the semi-final match. Mason won by a score of 10-0. This set up a rematch of the final in the Mason Team Tournament earlier in the season as Kerrville defeated Boerne South in the other semi-final match. Mason had a lot of younger players that had to step up and play all weekend and they did an excellent job of competing. Some of our top players were competing in State Robotics in Houston. At the end of doubles, Mason was down 3-4 as singles began to go on the court. We had a few close matches and up until the very end we had a chance to win but in a few of our matches, we had dug ourselves a hole too big to overcome in a short time. Mason lost 8-11. The girls’ team consisted of Raegan Glentz, Kate Gillespie, Sandra Duarte, Shay Baker, Molly Schwertner, Ruby Magnus, Sloan Townsend, and Grace Chapman. Playing for the boys were Ethan Powell, Cason Dudney, Kason Silerio, Emanuel Martinez, Tyson Keller, Fernando Torres, Corbin Norris, and Mathew Finn. Thank you to Coach Tiffany Ake for accompanying me, and all the fans and parents for your never ending support. Mason Junior High tennis has off this week and will finish the season with their invitational tournament at the end of April, District May 1st and the Second annual Lee Graham Junior/Adult open May 2nd and 3rd.
