Mason Junior High Ends Successful Tennis Season

On Friday April 25th we had several Mason Junior High tennis players compete in our “B” division tournament. Andrew Padilla competed in boys singles. In girls’ singles, Tessa Guice placed first beating fellow teammate Sarah Williams. Also competing in this division was Jenna Johnson. Girl’s doubles saw an all Mason finals with the team of Jill Donop and Breana Nail edging out a victory over teammates Julie Mae Drazan and Reagan Gibbs. The team of Bridgit Herrington and Victoria Baltierra placed third. Saturday April 26th was the “A” division of the tournament. There was lots of great tennis played for junior high students. In 8th grade girls singles, Ryli Ruffin placed first. Also competing in this division was Ella Canfield who reached the quarterfinals. T. R. Kerr reached the finals of the 8th grade boys singles. Competing in this division was Cason Dudney and Fernando Torres who both won one match before losing to tough players. Kate Gillespie placed second in 7th grade girls singles. Competing in this division were Ruby Magnus, who placed 4th and Bailey Taylor. In 7th boys singles, Ethan Powell placed first and Tyson Keller 4th. Molly Schwertner and Sandra Duarte came up a little short in 8th girls’ doubles in a tough tie-breaker, taking 2nd place. Also competing for Mason was Grace Chapman and Raegan Palacio. Our one boy’s doubles team in 8th grade was Kason Silerio and Mathew Finn who placed 2nd. In 7th girls doubles the team of Raegan Glentz and Sloan Townsend placed first, 7th boys doubles the team of Corbin Norris and John Benefield placed 2nd and in 8th grade mixed doubles, the team of Shay Baker and Bode McMillan placed first.

This tournament was good preparation for our team as we headed into District on May 1st. Mason Junior High tennis players once again stepped up and played outstanding tennis. We won both boys and girls divisions in 7th and 8th grade. Ryli Ruffin placed first in 8th girl’s singles, Ella Canfield 2nd, Sarah Williams 3rd and also competing was Jenna Johnson. T.R. Kerr placed first in 8th boy’s singles and Cason Dudney 2nd. Kate Gillespie won first place in 7th girls singles, Tessa Guice placed 3rd and also competing was Natalie Zapata. The team of Raegan Glentz and Sloan Townsend placed first in 7th girl’s doubles, Ruby Magnus and Bailey Taylor placed 2nd and Bridgit Herrington and Victoria Baltierra placed 3rd. Ethan Powell won 7th grade boys singles over fellow teammate Tyson Keller. Also competing were Chet Weitz and Andrew Padilla. In 7th boy’s doubles, Corbin Norris and John Benefield placed 2nd. Mason placed first through fourth in 8th girl’s doubles. Molly Schwertner and Sandra Duarte took first place, Jill Donop and Breana Nail placed 2nd, Grace Chapman and Raegan Palacio placed 3rd and Julie Mae Drazan and Reagan Gibbs placed 4th. In 8th boy’s doubles, the team of Kason Silerio and Mathew Finn placed 2nd and the team of Leonel Blas and Fernando Torres placed 3rd. Finally in 8th mixed doubles, the team of Shay Baker and Bode McMillan took home the gold.

Once again, we held the Lee Graham Junior/Adult Open tournament on Saturday May 3rd. This tournament was started last year in memory of Mr. Lee Graham who was a supporter of all Mason athletics and athletes. A great time was had by all and there was lots of good competition. In 7th girls singles, the team of Raegan Glentz and Traci Jordan (who was a last minute sub after winning her 4th state girls doubles title on Tuesday) placed 1st, Kate Gillespie and Amelia Banner placed 2nd and Sloan Townsend and Serena Kerr placed 3rd. In 7th boys doubles the team of Ethan Powell and Wade Powell placed 1st, Tyson Keller and John Keller placed 2nd, John Benefield and Jason McMillan placed 3rd, Corbin Norris and Mitch Rasberry placed 4th and Andrew Padilla and John Gillespie won consolation. In 8th boy’s doubles, the team of Cason Dudney and Chase Smith placed first, T.R. Kerr and Reese Kerr placed 2nd, Bode McMillan and Bruce Lehmberg placed 3rd and Kason Silerio and Scott Haupert placed 4th. In 8th grade girls doubles, the team of Ella Canfield and Salah Eckert placed first, Molly Schwertner and Susan Grote placed 2nd, Sandra Duarte and Deborah Hofmann placed 3rd, Jenna Johnson and Chel Terrell placed 4th and Julie Mae Drazan and Terry Lehmberg won consolation. And finally in 8th mixed doubles, the team of Ryli Ruffin and Mike Baird placed first, Ruby Magnus and Bobby Halamicek placed 2nd, Shay Baker and Kyle Eckert placed 3rd, Tammi Pinter and Mathew Finn placed 4th and Raegan Palacio and John Palacio won consolation. I cannot express enough the gratitude to everyone for their help and participation. Special thanks to Coby Velez and Monaco Schmidt for coming and helping me run these last few tournaments so that Coach Tiffany Ake and I could help our players.
