Kerrville, Texas — Peterson Regional Medical Center (PRMC) continues to take giant steps towards improving the health of newborns and infants by again earning the Texas Ten Step facility designation from the Department of State Health Services and the Texas Hospital Association for a second consecutive term or the past four years.
The Texas Ten Step Program encourages breastfeeding as the preferred method of feeding for newborns and infants. PRMC joins a growing number of Texas birth facilities that are supporting new mothers and their decision to breastfeed.
Based on the World Health Organization (WHO)/ UNICEF’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the program aims to assist birth facility’s support of breastfeeding mothers before, during, and after delivery; encourages them to identify breastfeeding resources for the mother after she is discharged; and encourages facilities to reach the Healthy People 2020 goal of having 82 percent of mothers exclusively breastfeeding when they go home with their newborn.
Texas Ten Step facilities are asked to address 85% of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, be designated as a Texas Mother-Friendly Worksite, evaluate their breastfeeding policies, maternity care practices and educate all healthcare staff routinely with evidence-based courses.
Tina Korbelik, Director of Women’s Services at PRMC, is proud of the efforts put forth by staff to encourage mothers giving birth at Peterson to exclusively breastfeed. “Statistics show that 75% of mothers in Texas choose to breastfeed. But fewer than half of babies born in Texas hospitals leave the hospital exclusively breastfeeding. Our nurses, midwives, doctors at Peterson work very hard to help young mothers successfully breastfeed and this helps us meet our goal to retain our Texas Ten Step Program and Texas Mother-Friendly Worksite designations, and join the other select Texas hospitals in promoting breastfeeding to our new mothers. Peterson’s breastfeeding promotion and support year after year is extraordinary and is a true testament to ensuring the health of our newest Texans.”
Peterson is the only hospitals in the region with an International Lactation Consultant on staff. Lori Pruitt, RN, BSN, IBCLC, has expanded her knowledge base and obtained certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in order to help moms and babies achieve their goals for breastfeeding success.
