Once again Mason lured hundreds of top tennis players to town as the Dr Pepper/Babolat Open was played last weekend. The tournament started on Thursday with a four hour rain delay. That delay didn’t dampen the spirits of the 600 entries what-so-ever.
The tournament is hosted each year by the Mason Tennis Association and is sponsored by the Mason Bottling Company and Babolat. This is the third year that Babolat (a French owned racquet and ball company) has helped sponsor the tournament by furnishing the balls. Dr Pepper furnishes the awards for the Jr and Adult divisions. The tournament is one of the chief fundraisers for MTA and the help of these two companies is greatly appreciated.
The MTA would also like to thank all the families that provided housing for out of town players and food for the concessions. A special thanks to those families that allowed us to use the tennis court at their homes. Those families are Amelia Banner, Frances and Billy Body, David and Pat, Becky and Joe Griffith, Warren and Susan Grote, Troy and Cara Ruffin, and the family of Craig and Kathy Tallent. Without the use of these courts we would not be able to host such an event.
Several Mason players (both juniors and adults) faired very well in the tournament. The results are as follow:
