Dear Gerry,

I have been a weekend resident of Masollan for 18 years and have hopes of retiring here someday. But lately my husband has mentioned that he no longer wants to retire here because of the poor condition of Mas-o-llan Road. He says he cannot imagine driving the road on a daily basis and now refuses to come out in his good truck. We don’t bring equipment out because it is impossible to pull a loaded trailer on the road without risking damage to the trailer and the equipment. Both of our trucks have required extensive frame repair.

My neighbors broke an axle on their RV on Mas-o-llan Road and will not come out with their motorcycles. As a matter of fact, I rarely see them anymore.

I understand that Federal Express and UPS complain about the road and do not want to deliver on it. I hear that the condition of the road has depressed property sales here.

I have not taken the time to count the number of residents on Mas-o-llan Road but I’m certain that, all told, we pay significant property taxes to the county.

We need extensive and substantial road work on Mas-o-llan Road to make it drivable. I am sending this letter in hopes that it may be the beginning of serious dialogue between Mason County Road Maintenance, Mason County Commissioners, and the residents of Masollan.

Thanks for allowing me this public forum,

Donna Byrd
