Debbie Armstrong’s gorgeous Lotería quilt will be on display in the Stribling Room of the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library for the next two months. This amazing quilt was created around 2002-203 and took about a year to complete. Debbie’s inspiration came from a shower curtain that she purchased that had the images of Mexican Lotería cards. Lotería Mexicana is a game of chance similar to Bingo that uses richly decorated playing cards instead of Bingo balls. There are 54 different cards, and they are recognized in all of Mexico. The images of the cards are hand-embroidered, and the quilt is tied on the back. To complete the quilt, Debbie embroidered dichos—proverbial and poetic phrases repeated again and again in Mexican families—to create a decorative border. Come see if you can translate them!
