Happy Valentines!
Tuesday, February 10, 2009 • Posted February 10, 2009

Sometimes, you just feel good about life.

Over the last week, for some unexplained reason, I've just been in a pretty good mood.

Last weekend, Peanut and I went out to Sean and Terri's on Friday and had a great time with them. Then, on Saturday, I went to the Bluebonnet CASA fundraiser at the Old Peanut Mill. Though I could go on and on about how great the food was and how much fun Jody Nix's music was; but, there are a couple of letters that say it much better than I, so I'll move on.

On Sunday, Connie and I headed to Uvalde for a funeral. Not the cheeriest of events; but, it was the first time in a while that big sister and I got to spend some time together just chatting, so that made it all worthwhile. And, we got to notice that (by comparison), Mason has not been nearly as hard hit by the drought as south Texas. The Sabinal River was barely flowing, and the Frio disappears in some places.

Then, on Sunday night/Monday morning, we got two tenths of an inch of rain! Not exactly a drought buster; but, you take what God gives and say thanks.

The upcoming week looks promising as well.

On Saturday, I'll be over at Habitat for Humanity's warehouse accepting donations for the following week's sale. Yes, I know it's Valentine's Day; but, I'm one of the only single members of the Habitat board, so I volunteered to man the warehouse and allow everyone else to make their romantic plans!

There are two charitable groups having romantic Valentine dinners, at River of Life and at the Square Plate. Then, Willow Creek Cafe and Old Peanut Mill have special dinners planned. And, of course, for those that just want to go out together and eat, I'm sure Zavala's, Santos and Northside will fit the bill nicely.

I've never been much of a Valentine's guy. I guess that explains why I'm single, or shows you how much of my life I've been single. I do remember going all out and doing the whole flowers/candy/surprise thing; but, those memories seem to be fading rapidly.

For all the rest of you, let me issue a warning - if your loved one says, "Oh, don't do anything special," that does NOT mean to not do ANYTHING! It means, "surprise me." It means, "I don't want to know what you are going to do." It means, "I don't need an expensive gift, but you better not ignore me." Just a warning in case you think you're off the hook this year.

The day after Valentine's, I'm going to a wedding out of town. It's a small affair; but, it's for a gal that I'm glad to say has become a friend of mine, and I know she's hopelessly in love, so it will make a great end to a Valentine's weekend for me.

Monday is Presidents' Day, and though the News office will be open, I know it will be fairly quiet, so still more good as far as I'm concerned.

So, I'm in a good mood.

Now that I've recounted the things that have just occurred, and detailed the plans in the immediate future, I know why. I have friends. I have family. I have a good life.

Happy Valentine's week to all of you!

It’s all just my opinion, but it’s what I wish would happen.
