We didn’t get to sit at the courts and watch it rain last weekend, but we did get to see some great tennis and the Mason tennis team were playing their share of it. This tournament was started in 2001 and Mason has never won a division let alone placed above 4th place. This year Mason won two divisions and won the team championship decisively.
Paced by an extra strong performance by a senior laden girl’s team, Mason scored 197 points with Fredericksburg coming in a distant second with 173 points. Kerrville was third with 109, followed by Brownwood, Midland Christian, Granbury, and Pflugerville.
In singles, freshman Matt Banner finished third in the tournament and sophomore Paden Hemphill finished 12th. Sophomore Makenzie Mitchell played her first tournament of her career and finished 2nd behind senior Lindsey Mechem of Fredericksburg. Cristi Slocum was narrowly defeated for 5th place.
The boys and girls doubles teams all met in the final round as the team of Bobby Buist and Jared Hudson outlasted teammates Gabe Gonzales and Matt Harper for fifth place.
In the girls doubles, Mason clearly dominated as two senior teams eliminated all competition and met each other in the finals. Denay Baxter and Brittany Estes won first with a strong performance in the finals against Madison Burney and Tabitha Zant. Burney and Zant knocked out the #1 seeds in the second round 6-3,6-4.
The other all Mason final was in Mixed Doubles as the team of Amanda Henrich and Dakota Wawryzniak outlasted teammates Ellie Blair and Thach Martin in a terrific split set final. Both teams pulled off upset wins over the top two seeded teams in the tournament in the semi-finals.
Mason also had some JV players that played very well as they filled in for a team that was unable to bring a full team. Kaitlyn Cavness finished 7th place in girls singles while the mixed team of Tyler Chew and Emily Ellebracht ended up 12th place, but put a great scare into the #1 seeded team in the first round as they lost a 7-6,6-3 match to the team from Granbury.
This week, the varsity is back in Mason with the 25th Annual Hill Country Classic. This year the 5A teams coming will be Abilene High (#5), San Antonio Churchill (#8), San Angelo Central (#15), and Southlake Carroll (#17). Number 6th ranked 4A Abilene Cooper, Abilene Wylie (#1 in 3A), Fredericksburg (also a top ten 3A team) will make this the toughest tournament in the state this week and the Punchers and Cowgirls will have their hands full. The JV will travel to Fredericksburg on Thursday to play in the JV tournament there.
Come on out and watch some great tennis. Matches will start at 8:00 Friday morning at the tennis center and will conclude late Saturday afternoon.
