Friends of the Library Hear Veleda Boyd Presentation
Tuesday, February 17, 2009 • Posted February 17, 2009

There was standing room only in the Stribling Room at the annual Friends of the Library meeting held on Sunday, January 25, 2009. Cristy Whitaker, president of Friends, gave a warm welcome to those in attendance and was pleased to present Veleda Boyd as the speaker for the day’s program. Introducing her late husband Jim Boyd’s newly published work: “A Servant Leader’s Journey: Lessons From Life”, the audience was entranced as Boyd read excerpts from the book, encouraging the audience to join in the journey themselves. An opportunity to purchase the book was available following the program with all profits donated to the ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease) Foundation.

The annual meeting also invited renewals and new memberships to the Friends for 2009. A recap of the Friends activities in 2008 was shared, as well as what the Friends were able to provide for the library in the past year. Those activities sponsored by the Friends included establishing the new ‘Cup & Chaucer’ area inside the library, a live play production of ‘Old Yeller’, the annual Book and Bake Sale and the Old Yeller Day Celebration. Items purchased for the library include the outfitting of the Cup & Chaucer area (furniture, appliances and supplies), a huge flat-screen television, Wii system and a visual projector, which will be especially helpful for Story Time.

The election of officers was held during the business portion of the afternoon event. Elected to serve on the Friends board are: Cristy Whitaker, President, Margaret Brown, Vice-President, Pat Hrdlicka, Secretary-Treasurer, Carolyn Nixon, Membership and Sherry Alm, Events Chairperson. An open discussion was held with the members in attendance regarding future plans and goals of the Friends of the Library, along with announcements of upcoming calendar events planned for 2009. The next event will be the popular Book and Bake Sale in mid April, as a kickoff for National Library Week! Any members not able to attend this meeting are encouraged to contact any of the officers listed. We’d like to hear from you!

For those wishing to join or renew their memberships, please go by the library and fill out a membership form. Membership is open to all and dues are nominal, yet, enables much to be done for the library and the community!
