J.V. Tennis Takes 2nd At State
Wednesday, March 11, 2009 • Posted March 11, 2009

The Mason J.V. Boys and Girls Tennis Team participated in the 1A State Tennis Championship Tournament on March the 6th and 7th. The event, conveniently located in Menard and Mason, featured the best 1A varsity squads including the three time defending 1A State Champion Menard Yellow Jackets. The other participants were Irion County, Paint Rock, Claude, Leakey, Wink, and Knippa.

The format for the tournament was as follows:

2 Boys and Girls Doubles matches

1 Mixed Doubles match

4 Boys and Girls Singles matches

The first team to win 7 matches wins.

The Mason J.V. Punchers and Cowgirls drew a very tough Wink squad in the first round led by two very tough competitors, Seth and Shea Abbott, and a very solid well-coached bunch of players. Thanks to some great tennis from our girls who won all of their matches in singles and doubles, we pulled out the match 7 to 5.

In the semifinal round we encountered a very deep Knippa team which we knew going in was going to be very tough. At the end of the doubles we led 3 matches to 2 thanks to both the boys and girls number 2 teams pulling out some tough matches as well as our mixed doubles team of Tyler Chew and Emily Ellebracht. In the singles the boys carried the load with 3 out of 4 victories.

In the final round of the tournament the Mason J.V. faced the 3 time defending 1A State Champion Menard Yellow Jackets. The team included the 2008 1A Girls Doubles State Champions, the 2008 1A Boys Doubles Champions, and a 1A Boys State Singles Qualifier.

As the match began, the Punchers and Cowgirls seemed completely undaunted by the task at hand by taking a 3 to 2 lead thanks to some very convincing doubles victories by our number two teams of Cristi Slocum / Tabitha Zant and Andy Duarte / Chance Stockbridge as well as a tremendous 3 set comeback victory by our mixed doubles team.

When the singles began, we knew that Menard would be tough despite being down by one match. We won 3 out of the 8 matches which in the end left us 1 short of the championship. We were very pleased with the effort the team put forth and the manner in which they conducted themselves. You would have been proud.

The following players participated in our effort:

Girls: Christi Slocum, Tabitha Zant, Lauren Keith, Kaitlyn Cavness, Emily Ellebracht, Celeste Hamilton, Samantha Jordan and Amanda Hudson.

Boys: Jorge Morales, Andy Duarte, Paden Hemphill, Chance Stockbridge, Ethan Hudson, Tyler Chew and Trey Schwertner.

I would also like to extend a special thanks to our manager Gideon Gonzales for taking care of the many intangibles thus allowing us to concentrate on coaching.

Thank you to all of the parents and supporters of our kids. You do make a difference. You are what make Mason such a special place to live and work.

I would also like to thank Coach Paul Smith for everything that he does to ensure our continuing success. There is not a more dedicated, competent, and professional individual in the business. Mason is very fortunate to have him.

It is truly a privilege to be a part of the greatest tennis community in the nation.
