In January, 1999, with the encouragement and advice of the late Dr. Jackie Hunt, St. Paul Lutheran Wellness Exercise Class was organized. This it the project of the St. Paul Lutheran Parish Nurse.
At middle age, there is the beginning of Sarcopenia (muscle loss) and Osteoporosis (bone loss). Each condition my be slowed by exercise and better nutrition. To improve the safety and activity level of our members is the goal of the class.
Wellness Exercise is held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 3:30-4:30pm, in the Fellowship Hall of St. Paul Lutheran Church (located on Post Oak). Joan Williams, Parish Volunteer, also assists with the class. Each class begins with a devotion and prayer. Helping members to understand the relationship between body, mind, spirit, and our health is part of the class. Blood Pressure Monitoring and health information are available at each class. An Exercise Guide from NIA is given to each member and their video is used during the class.
In the beginning, the class did Chair Dancing Exercises. Now, we concentrate on muscle and strength building, flexibility, improved balance, and proper breathing. Focus is on safety and comfort while exercising. Exercise moves are performed sitting or standing, while holding to back of a chair. Physical exercise also may improve mental alertness and weight control. Members are encouraged to wear comfortable exercise clothes. Some weights are available for use.
The camaraderie and exercise is truly uplifting and stress relieving for all. This class is open to anyone, male or female...and it's never to late to begin!! "Exercise is like a savings account. The more you put in, the more your going to get out of it" We have several men brave enough to exercise with us. Laughter, fellowship, and fun are found in the Fellowship Hall at St. Paul. Oh, we left the best for last..."The Price Is Right"...It's free! Muscles are becoming stronger and friendships are becoming dearer! What a blessing to work-out and worship at the same time!!!
