The Harper Library and the Harper News invite all to the Awards Ceremony of the Second Annual “Americans Who Tell the Truth” Contest on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. It will be held in the Harper Community Hall in conjunction with the library’s benefit, Saturday in the Park.
Junior high and high school students were invited to write an essay about an American who has contributed greatly to our country. This contest was inspired by Robert Schetterly’s book, “Americans Who Tell the Truth.” Mr. Schetterly, has created portraits of many Americans from all walks of life. With each portrait, he’s included a significant quote and a brief biographical sketch. Both the school libraries and the Harper Library have copies of this book. More information can be found at www.americanswhotellthetruth.org.
The winners of the contest will be announced on Saturday afternoon about 3:30. First, second and third place winners will receive cash prizes and the top thirty essays will be published in a book and placed in both the Harper Library and the Harper School Libraries. In addition, each author of a published essay will receive a copy of the book.
Earlier that Saturday (March 28) the library will host a barbecue, book sale, silent auction, cake auction, washer tournament and kids games and arts and crafts. The barbecue will feature chicken or sausage with homemade potato salad, beans and desserts.
All proceeds go to the Harper Library. For more information call Martha Stevens at 864-5655 or the Harper Library at 864-4993. The library will be closed on March 28 as all volunteers will be working at Saturday in the Park.
