Extended hours and the ongoing success of the City Swimming Pool operations were the main topics of discussion during the Citizen’s Meeting on March 26th. The meeting, open to the public, included Mayor Hinckley, City Commissioner Bob Vacek, parents, grandparents, and other concerned citizens. Objectives were steps to keep the pool open for longer hours and ways to implement this process. It became clear during the discussion that more lighting and additional lifeguards would be needed for safety in order to extend the hours of operation. The Citizen’s Committee is actively working to resolve these issues.
Ongoing fundraising will be an integral part of the success of various projects and safety issues. The first committee fundraiser will be a shirt and bake sale. The shirts will include our motto, “S.O.S.“ (Save Our Summer). We would like to see every member of our community wearing the shirt if they are concerned with Mason’s Youth and the possibility of helping them keep busy this summer with more swim time. The committee is also working on a central donation bank account dedicated to pool projects, and the ongoing success of the pool, for those who wish to make monetary donations.
Mayor Hinckley reported that the required pool repairs would be fully funded by the City of Mason and construction would be completed by May 15th. We appreciate what the City is doing to open the pool this summer and for the generous donation from the Riata Service Organization for pool operations. Extended hours, a pool manager, and other needs can be met with the community support of the shirt sales.
Also at the top of the committee list is to produce a Grand Opening “SPLASH DAY” for the kids, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 30th. Watch for more details…
Due to the hard work and funding provided by Alpha Beta Psi we also have a family-oriented picnic area which is the perfect place for a birthday party beside the pool. Additions to the area will be completed soon. We appreciate Alpha Beta Psi for an excellent addition to our community swimming pool.
Other possible projects discussed at the meeting included “Seniors Only” swim sessions, water aerobics for senior citizens and physical therapy patients, an “Adults Only” weekly swim session, a “Family Night” weekly session, and extending the pool hours even longer for the summer of 2010. We are also planning to make swimming lessons available again for this summer.
